Cougars finish off HRV girls

BEND — A few short weeks ago, the Hood River Valley girls basketball team was talking about its playoff chances. To get there, the one team the Eagles needed to beat was Mountain View.

But, for the second time in as many meetings, the Cougars proved that they are the better team, winning Saturday’s second head-to-head matchup, 73-39.

It was the final Intermountain Conference game of the season for both teams, and the ninth conference loss for the Eagles, who finished 6-16 overall.

“It was definitely a disappointing way to end the season, especially for the seniors,” coach Tracy Norton said. “We just couldn’t get the offense started and didn’t handle their pressure well as a team. They just pressed us to death.”

Junior Suni Davis led HRV with nine points, and was followed by junior Anna Hidle with eight, and senior Brittany Reed, junior Alyssa Ortega and sophomore Kristen Hedges with six each.

Sophomore wing Talia Hinman pitched in two along with senior leading scorer Becki Flory.

For the Cougars, senior Robin Taylor — the IMC’s third leading scorer at 13.1 ppg — poured in 21 points to lead three Cougars in double figures.

Flory, Reed and Lori Wimmers are the only three graduating seniors from a young HRV team that will look to make a playoff run in 2004.
