Bravissimo music camp enrolling for summer

Bravissimo, the Columbia Gorge Music and Arts Camp, has begun accepting registrations for its summer 2003 session.

The camp, now in its second year, will run from June 16-20 at Hood River Valley High School. The camp is designed for students in grades 6-9.

HRVHS Music Director Mark Steighner, arts and education supporter Joan Yasui Emerson, and Community Education director Mike Schend are once again putting together a week of music and arts instruction that provides master class instruction, and the chance to sample a wide variety of enrichment activities.

This year’s Master Classes will be offered for flute, clarinet, saxophone, upper brass, low brass, percussion, and voice.

Additionally, two new Master Classes are being added. Musical Theatre will be a chance for singers and actors to prepare music and scenes from Broadway shows; Rock School will be a place for rock guitarists, bassists, and drummers to learn the skills of putting together a band.

Steighner says that judging by comments from last year’s camp, the experience for the campers was rewarding and fun. “Everyone really enjoyed the camp. The kids liked the teachers and had a lot of fun with the enrichment classes.” Visits and demonstrations by Portland Taiko, Oregon Ballet, hip-hop dancers, turntable scratchers, and local artists, writers, and musicians added to the enrichment program and many will return this summer.
