First-year expansion team Jalisco proved that it is for real on Sunday, defeating Azteca, 3-0, to maintain first place in the Columbia Gorge Soccer League with 34 points.
Some doubters surfaced after Jalisco lost Friday’s Torneo de Copa game to Spartak by a score of 3-2. But few remained on Sunday after Jalisco took down the 2002 league runner-up, Azteca.
Deportivo Santiago remained in second place with 31 points after a 5-5 tie with Santos, while Guerrero moved ahead of Azteca into a second-place tie with a 9-0 win over Spartak.
Azteca dropped into fourth place with its second loss of the season, but is still one of four teams with a chance to win the Copa — which will conclude at 6 p.m. on the Fourth of July at Wy’east Middle School.
Another team still vying for the Copa is San Antonio, which took down Guerrero, 4-2, to earn a spot in the semifinals against Mt. Adams, who defeated Bella Vista, 3-1.
Wednesday’s other semifinal game is between Spartak and Azteca, which beat Santos, 6-0, in last Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
San Antonio and Bella Vista are currently tied for fifth in the standings with 25 points each, while Mt. Adams is alone in seventh with 23.
Four more teams are tied for eighth place, with Real Madrid, Abasolo, Sahuayo Jr. and Santos all with 22 points.
Real Madrid lost its weekend game by a score of 2-0 to Bella Vista, while the three other teams vying for the eighth and final playoff spot each notched at least one point to make things interesting entering the final five weeks of league play.
Santos and Sahuayo Jr. each tied their games to earn one point, and Abasolo, the 2001 champion, beat Tecos 2-0 to move into a tie for the final spot.
Tecos is still in the running with 18 points, but the remaining seven teams have been virtually eliminated.
Last-place Los Betos did, however, pick up its first points of the season with a 3-2 win over San Pablo.
A league all-star game is in the works for late August, with the best players from the CGSL set to take on an all-star team from the Portland area. More details will follow in the coming weeks.
