Oates, Ritter, Martin shine in tourney
Recent Hood River Valley High School graduate Corinne Oates won the 18-and-under girls division at last weekend’s Junior A tournament at the Hood River Sports Club, defeating fellow local Jodie Gates in the semifinals (7-5, 6-4) and Amy Lorenzen of Pendleton in the finals (5-7, 6-2, 10-8 tiebreaker). Sean Ritter, an incoming senior at HRVHS, placed second in the 16-and-under boys division, while Natasha Martin won the 16-and-under girls division. Incoming sophomore Matt Byrne won his first match, but lost in the second round. All four players are coached by Kevin Beeson and Casey O’Shea of the HR Sports Club.
The HR Sports Club will be hosting 60 of the region’s top junior tennis players in the Pacific Northwest Championships this weekend. However, no local players are participating.
Snow skating event at Timberline
The first-ever U.S. Open of Snowskating will take place Saturday at Timberline Ski Area. Featuring two divisions (single deck and bi-deck), the competition will be held in a “jam format,” with the top five riders in each division moving on to the finals. State Games sign-ups now accepted
Handbooks for this year’s State Games of Oregon are now available, and can be obtained at all Fred Meyer locations, parks and recreation departments, and selected athletic clubs. All Oregonians are eligible for the 36 competitions that take place throughout Portland from July 11-13. The State Games is an Olympic-style amateur festival that offers all Oregonians the opportunity to participate in their choice of sports. Approximately 16,000 people are expected to register. HRV basketball camps upcoming
Hood River Valley High School will be hosting two basketball day camps this month, starting next week with the HRV Hoops Camp for boys and girls entering 4th-8th grades. Play lasts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and players are asked to bring a lunch and water. Preregistration cost is $85, and will go up to $90 at the door. Also coming to HRVHS this month is the Eagles Varsity Camp for players entering 9th-12th grades. Camp is scheduled for July 14-18 and preregistration cost is $65. Gorge Youth Football seeking signups
Hood River Community Education is now taking registrations for the Gorge Youth Football tackle football league. Kids in grades 5-6 will begin play July 28, with games taking place in August and September. The six-game season will last until Sept. 20, and practices are typically from 6-7:30 p.m. five times a week. Once games begin, the practice limit is three per week. Please send in your registrations to Community Education by June 20. Players must meet age and weight standards, and must also wear the uniforms, pads and helmets provided by the league. GOAL soccer camp coming next week
Sign-ups are now being taken for the GOAL soccer camp, which will be held July 8-11 from 3-7 p.m. at Westside Field. Instruction will be provided by top local coaches like Jose Ponce, and all kids interested in improving their soccer skills are encouraged to sign up. Oregon skatepark tours being offered
Tour the state’s best skateparks this summer with Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation. This tour is highly recommended for youth skateboarders ages 12-16, and two days have been selected this summer. The first is July 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will include stops in Hood River, Tigard, McMinnville and Newberg. Registration is required by Friday and cost is $15 per person. The second tour is set for Aug. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will include stops at Burnside, Beaverton, Tualatin and Wilsonville. For more, call 541-296-9533.
Outrigger Canoe races July 19-20
The seventh-annual Gorge Outrigger Canoe Races are set to take place at Stevenson Waterfront Park on July 19-20. This is the largest event of its kind in the Northwest, and two separate competitions will be held.
