Mason/McNew team wins scramble

Mark and Armanda Mason teamed up with Carl and Kathleen McNew last Sunday to win the first Couples Scramble of the summer at Indian Creek Golf Course. Twenty-one couples took to the links, but only three foursomes found their way onto the leaderboard. John and Lynn Garcia teamed up with Bob and Kay Hanel to place second, while Tom and Josie Modrich paired with Jon and Lydia Gardner to take third. Long drive for the men went to Mark Mason, and the ladies honor went to Eloise Russell. Closest to Pin was Skip Tschanz for the men, and Patti Tessmer for the women. Outrigger Canoe races this weekend

The seventh-annual Gorge Outrigger Canoe Races are set to take place at Stevenson Waterfront Park this Saturday and Sunday. This is the largest event of its kind in the Northwest, and two separate competitions will be held. Six-person canoes will run Saturday at 10 a.m., and one- or two-person canoes will run Sunday at 9 a.m. Hawaiian-style concessions will be available at Waterfront Park, and an awards/raffle ceremony will follow. Hanks to teach kiting clinic Sunday

Skamania County Parks and Recreation is proud to announce that professional kiteboarder Renee Hanks will be hosting an adult kiteboarding clinic on Sunday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rock Creek Park in Stevenson, Wash. The land-based class is geared toward the beginner or first-time kite flyer. As part of the clinic, Hanks will be teaching the importance of kite safety, setting up, launching, landing, as well as some practice flying. Cost is $50 per person and comfortable shoes are recommended. Group will meet at the Rock Creek Recreation Center (710 SW Rock Creek Dr.). Call 509-427-9478 to register.

Community Education youth soccer

Hood River Community Education is now accepting sign-ups for youth soccer. Preregistration forms for boys and girls entering grades 3-8 (determined by grade, not age) are due to the Community Ed office by July 25, and practices will begin Aug. 25. Cost is $35 per player, and includes a T-shirt. League play will run from early September through Oct. 25. Please note that all players must wear shinguards to participate. Girls varsity hoop camp next week

Hood River Valley High School will be hosting a girls varsity basketball camp July 21-25. Play lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and cost is $65 — preregistered through Community Education — or $70 at the door. All high-school age girls are invited to attend this camp, which will be led by HRV coaches Tracy Norton and Phil Hukari. For more info or to register, call 386-2055.

Summer volleyball camp coming to HRV

New HRV varsity volleyball coach Jen Baklenko will hold a four-day high-school summer camp at the high school July 28-31 from 6-8:30 p.m. each night. Cost is $40 through Community Education and sign-ups are being taken right now. Baklenko, who played Division I volleyball for the University of San Diego, said she is looking forward to meeting all high school age players so she can start reshaping the program. In addition to the summer camp, Baklenko is holding Monday night summer practices from 6-7:30 p.m. until Aug. 4 (July 28 is for those attending camp only). For more info, call 386-2055.

Gorge Youth Football players needed

Hood River Community Education is now taking registrations for the Gorge Youth Football tackle football league. Kids in grades 5-6 will begin play July 28, with games taking place in August and September. The six-game season will last until Sept. 20, and practices are typically from 6-7:30 p.m. five times a week. Once games begin, the practice limit is three per week. Please send in your registrations to Community Education by June 20. Players must meet age and weight standards, and must also wear the uniforms, pads and helmets provided by the league. Julee’s hosts two weekend outings

Julee’s Gorge Tours is still looking for people interested in kayaking and rafting for its two weekend adventures. Saturday at 9 a.m. is the flatwater kayak adventure to Miller Island on the Columbia River, and Sunday afternoon will be the whitewater rafting adventure on the Deschutes River.
