Summer lacrosse league upcoming
A new summer lacrosse league is in the works, and Hood River Valley High School head coach Mac Jackson would like to get a head count as soon as possible. Games would be Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. at Westside, beginning either June 11 or June 18 and running through Aug. 6. The schedule will be finalized after sign-ups. Two divisions are planned: a high school to 21 year-old division and a middle school division. To sign up, call Jackson at 386-1232, and leave your name, grade (as of spring 2003) and phone number. Registrations will take place through Community Education. Please sign up by Friday.
Kids qualify for state Hershey meet
A group of nine local kids have qualified for the Oregon State Hershey Track Meet after their performances at a local event on May 29 at Hood River Valley High School. The nine qualifiers will compete at Hayward Field in Eugene on June 28. Girls qualifiers in the 11-12 year-old division were Rachel Perry (standing long jump, softball throw and 100 meter dash), Lauren Lloyd (200 meter dash) and Sheaalee Weatherill in the 800 meters. Kayla Lloyd was the lone 13-14 year-old girls qualifier in the 800 and 1,600 meter events. For the 11-12 boys, Joe Bryant qualified in the softball throw, the 100 and 200 meters, while Brandon Tolentino earned a trip to state in the 400 and 800 meters. In the 13-14 year-old boys division, Justin Tolentino qualified in the standing long jump and 200 meters, while Julio Avila qualified in the 100 and 800 meters. Aaron Mallon will compete in the softball throw.
Ladies night tonight at Indian Creek
Indian Creek Golf Course will begin its 9-hole Ladies Night tonight at 5:30 p.m. The “for fun” gathering will run throughout the summer, and anyone is welcome. Indian Creek Golf Pro Harold Bluestein will be giving a weekly tip at 5:15 p.m., so plan to show up early for some pointers. There is no obligation to play every week. Call 386-7770 with questions.
Cynthia Brocklesby totaled a scant number of putts (29) to top the field of Day’s Play last Thursday at Indian Creek. Sara Starnes and Vera Hawk tied for second with 20, while Susan Gutzler (32), Irene Kiyokawa (33) and Patsy Prideaux (33) rounded out the top five. Sign ups have begun for the June Skins tournament. Youth track meet scheduled at HRV
Hood River Community Education will be sponsoring a kids’ track meet at Hood River Valley High School on June 10 at 6 p.m. Starting at 5:30 p.m., there will be a clinic on various track-and-field events. Children 2-15 are welcome to participate. Cost is $1 per athlete, and ribbons will be awarded. Cancellation may occur due to weather. Call 386-2055 with questions.
4-H soccer sign-ups due June 11
The 4-H soccer season is ready to begin, and registrations for boys and girls ages 6-16 will be accepted until June 11. The first games will begin after school lets out on June 18, and coaches are also needed. Minimum registration requirements are a 2cm x 2cm photo, $10 registration fee, appropriate health forms, and a 4-H membership. Forms are available at Marco Sports (1205 B Street, Hood River) or at the 4-H Extension office. Community Ed tennis leagues start
Hood River Community Education will be sponsoring a number of summer tennis leagues, beginning June 10 in Hood River. Men’s doubles will start June 10, mixed doubles will start June 11, and women’s doubles will start June 12. In addition, a junior tennis team will start July 7.
