Obituaries - June 14

Sharon Bond

Sharon K. “Penny” House Bond, 62, a resident of The Dalles, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at a local hospital.

She was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Murphysboro, Ill., the youngest of three children to Harry A. and Mary (Worthen) House.

In 1943 her family moved to Hood River, where she grew up attending local schools. She was in the class of 1958 at Wy’East High School.

On Sept. 28, 1956, she married Burl Bond, Jr. and they made their home in Hood River for a number of years before moving to The Dalles in the late 1960s.

She was a homemaker and loved maintaining her home and cooking. Early in her adult life she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School classes. Active in her community, she served as a 4-H leader and as the official scorekeeper for the Western Little League in addition to serving with the Chenowith Roller Skating program and working as the statistician and scorekeeper for her husband’s Babe Ruth baseball team. For the past six years she had been the official scorekeeper for the Oregon High School State/Metro baseball series held in The Dalles each June.

Most of all, she loved animals, especially dogs. She had been active in animal concerns, for many years serving as the treasurer for Mid-Columbia Animal Friends spay and neuter fund. In more recent years she and her husband provided a foster home for Home At Last Animal Friends. She had told her friends that when they get to heaven they would find her working in Puppy Heaven.

She had been a member of the Rowena Baptist Church and enjoyed on-line witnessing for her faith with her computer. She discovered computers during the last three years of her life and enjoyed “dressing up” her e-mails and sending them.

She is survived by her husband, Burl Bond, Jr. and her children and their families; son Kent and his wife, Anna Bond, of Hillsboro and their three children, Derek, Chelsea, and Jessica; her daughter, Lisa and husband, Jeff Mabrey, of The Dalles and their three children Heidi, Jeffrey and Jacob; daughter Kaye and her husband, Wayne Smith, of The Dalles and their children Zachary and Summer.

Also surviving are her mother, Mary House of Hood River, brother Kent and Maria House of Prineville, Ore., sister Peggy and her husband, Don Carter, of Parkdale, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family, including her dog and steadfast companion Maddie. She was preceded in death by her father in 1967.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 16, in the Grand Ballroom of the Civic Auditorium in The Dalles, with the Reverend George Clark presiding. A luncheon reception will follow the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Small Time Dog Rescue, 5630 Wahtonka Road, The Dalles, OR 97058 or to Home At Last Animal Friends, P.O. Box 390 in The Dalles. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation and Burial.
