Maritime, Elks to meet for championship

Little League Corner

To be the best, you have to beat the best.

And, in Hood River Little League, it doesn’t get much better than the Hood River Elks and Maritime Services.

Only two other teams — McIsaac’s and the Odell Lions — were able to defeat the league’s best this season, making the run to the championship a foregone conclusion entering the final two weeks.

Both teams finished with identical 9-1 records in the season’s second half, and will meet for the league championship on July 4 in Hood River.

The Elks (18-2 overall) won the first-half title, also with a 9-1 mark, while last year’s champs, Maritime (17-3 overall), earned a share of the second half title by beating the Elks in one of the teams’ three meetings.

Meanwhile, seven of the 12 boys Majors All Star selections came from the league’s two best teams. Jimmy Gilkerson, Alex Ing, Philip Stenberg and Junior Alaniz will represent the Elks, and Tyler Williams, Dylan Bauld and Taylor Gray will represent Maritime.

Ethan Lucas was the only selection from the Parkdale Mountaineers, Jeremy Rowley was the lone McIsaac’s pick, and Taylor Sanders was the standout from Apple City Auto Body. Kevin Kreps and Andy Pate of Underwood Fruit rounded out the final roster.

In other Majors news, the Parkdale Mountaineers finished the season on a roll last week with three narrow wins over Apple City (10-9), Odell Lions (8-7) and Diamond Fruit. (4-2).

The Mountaineers (10-9) finished the season in third place, while the Lions and Diamond Fruit tied for fourth with an identical 9-11 mark.

First-year expansion club Apple City closed out the season in sixth place at 8-11, Sprint 509 took seventh at 7-13, McIsaac’s eighth at 6-14 and Underwood ninth at 5-15.

Note: Apple City and Parkdale had a makeup game on the schedule that was not played.
