Hood River resident Joan Carolyn Elmgren passed away Saturday, May 31, 2003, at her home from problems related to cancer. She was 66 years of age.
A Tribute Service will be held Wednesday, June 25, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.
Joan was born October 28, 1936, to Earl H. and Marian (Mulligan) Hite in Aberdeen, Wash. She grew up in Aberdeen, Wash., graduating from Weatherwax High School in 1954. She married Lee Roy Elmgren in Aberdeen on June 26, 1954, shortly after graduation. Together the Elmgrens started their family with the birth of their son Steven on December 7, 1955. Joan and Lee then moved to Hood River, Ore., in the late 1950s and have lived here ever since.
Mrs. Elmgren loved gardening and tending to her yard. She taught swimming at the outdoor pool for years. She also enjoyed walking and spending time with her family. Over the years Joan spent a lot of her time bowling and became quite an accomplished bowler.
She is survived by her husband Lee Elmgren of Hood River, son Steve and his wife Valerie of Hesperia, Calif., sister Janice Hooker of Gaston, Ore., niece Laura McCartney of Roseville, Calif., nephew Ken Hooker of Portland, Ore., and three granddaughters Leslie, Alison and Taylor all of Hesperia, Calif.

Joseph D. Leigh, 77, a resident of Dufur, died at a local care center in The Dalles, on Monday, June 16, 2003.
Joe was born April 12, 1926, in Everett, Wash., the oldest of five children to Clarence and Jennie (DeGraff) Leigh. He grew up in Gold Bar, Wash., until moving with his family to The Dalles in 1940. He later lived in Hood River, Mosier and settled in Dufur in the early 1980s.
He worked on the railroad as section hand starting at age 15 until his retirement on Nov. 30, 1987. Joe liked being with family and doing outside activities.
He is survived by four sons, Gene and wife, Linda Leigh of Gresham; Don Leigh and Ron and wife, Sabine Leigh, all of Mosier and Marvin and wife, Jeannie Leigh of The Dalles; sisters, Violet Wilson and Dorothy Griffin of The Dalles and Betty Clark of Dufur, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren devoted friend, Chester Pratt, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ben, in May 2003.
Viewing visitation was held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home June 18 and 19. Graveside services were at The Dalles IOOF Cemetery on June 19.
