City welcomes Greg Hoeger, new fire chief, on Monday

Community members are invited to meet new Hood River Fire Chief Greg Hoeger at an informal reception on Monday.

Hoeger began his new duties on Monday and officials have arranged for a public welcome from 5-6 p.m. in the City Council chambers at 211 Second Street.

He replaces Gary Willis, who left his position to work full-time in the family pear industry. Hoeger arrives from the Sacramento Fire District and will be paid a $65,000 annual salary to oversee the municipal department of 15 volunteers and 13 staffers.

Willis will remain involved in the local fire protection community, as a volunteer with Pine Grove Volunteer Fire District. He also plans to annually renew his $500 firefighter scholarship donation, a tradition he started this year. Hoeger oversees a staff of 15 volunteers and 13 paid personnel, from the fire hall located on Meyer Parkway, adjacent to 18th Street and the Hood River Aquatic Center.
