A Hood River student won first place in the Columbia Dance Ensemble’s 10th annual Weiler Choreography Competition on Feb. 22 at the Royal Durst Theater in Vancouver. The competition is for pre-professional choreographers aged 13 and up.
Taking first was Laila Winner, 16, of the Columbia Gorge Dance Academy in Hood River. “Paper Bag,” a solo dance for Hannah Jacobson, also of Hood River, was performed to music by Fiona Apple.
Winner is a senior and Jacobson a junior at Hood River Valley High School. Jacobson danced the role of Sugar Plum Fairy in this year’s local Nutcracker production.
The First, Second and Laureate choreographic works will be presented in the CDE and Friends annual spring repertory dance concert at the Winningstad Theater, Portland Center for the Performing Arts, on March 28 at 7:30 p.m. and March 29 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Columbia Dance Ensemble, 360-737-1922, at Ticketmaster and at the door.
Columbia Dance Ensemble provided the winning choreographers with the opportunity to produce their work in a professional theater setting, which included working with the lighting designer, sound technician and stage manager.
