Gorge Winds plays Habitat benefit

On Friday, May 16, Gorge Winds Concert Band and accordionist Karl Kment will combine their musical talents to provide a spring benefit concert for Mid-Columbia Habitat for Humanity. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., music begins at 6:45 p.m. at the Hood River Middle School Auditorium.

This will be an all-ages concert with music ranging from Broadway show tunes, to light classical music, marches and pops.

Tickets are available in advance from Waucoma Bookstore in Hood River and Collage of the Gorge in White Salmon, and at the concert for a $10 suggested donation.

Kment, a Hood River musician, will warm up the audience with lively accordion tunes from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. and later join the band as a special guest performer. Gorge Winds Concert Band has been providing local entertainment since January 2000.

Beginning with 22 members, the band has now grown to 50 members ranging in age from 14 to 84 years old, including musicians from nearly every community from Stevenson to Goldendale, Condon and the Tri-Cities.

Along with many favorites, the band will play “Triumphant Overture,” a piece composed specifically for them by Matthew Turner of Kent, Washington.

Refreshments will be available before the concert and during intermission. An exciting selection of raffle prizes have been donated by many White Salmon, Husum, Bingen and Hood River businesses.
