Jennings, Yasui scramble way to victory
Mick Jennings and Corey Yasui teamed up to shoot the low net score of 64 to win the Hood River Men’s Golf Association Two-Man Blind Scramble, held May 22 at Hood River Golf and Country Club. Three teams tied for second place with a round of 66: Mike Roberts/Joe Mazzara, Gary Sollman/Don Walker and Chad Wimmers/Dave Staehnke. Roberts scored a hole-in-one on the seventh hole, which was the fourth of his career. Other winners on the day were Gary Sollman (long putt of 16 feet, four inches) and Fred Stampflee (long drive of 288 yards). The next HRMGA event is the “No One to Blame but Yourself,” scheduled for June 1 at 8 a.m. Sign up in the Pro Shop.
Space Arc wins second race of year
Space Arc won its second Hood River Yacht Club race in two tries on May 21, edging out second-place Shaka by only four seconds. Space Arc won the race in 1 hour, 43 minutes, 36 seconds, while Shaka was close behind at 1:43:40. Tamanawas placed third at 1:44:44, while OX took fourth at 1:50:00.
Hershey Track Meet on Thursday
Hood River Community Education will sponsor its annual Hershey Track and Field meet on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Hood River Valley High School. Ages 9-14 are eligible to compete for a chance to go to Hershey, Pa., for the national competition later this summer. Each individual event winner at the local level will automatically qualify for the state meet, to be held in Eugene next month. Entry fee is $1 and competitors are limited to three events. HR Community Education will also host two open youth track meets on June 3 and June 10 at 6 p.m. at HRVHS. Ages
2-15 are welcome, and a free clinic will be offered at 5:30 p.m.
Big Winds offering daily lessons
Big Winds of Hood River is now offering beginning windsurfing and kiteboarding lessons at 9 a.m., 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Kiteboard, shortboard and private lessons are also available. For more info, call Big Winds at 386-6086.
HR Heat offering ‘mailbox makeovers’
The Hood River Heat girls 16-and-under softball team is trying to raise money for the upcoming summer season, and you can help. For a base price of $15, the team will sand and repaint your mailbox and flag. If you would like to add one-inch letters or numbers, the cost is 45 cents each. Three-inch letters or numbers cost 50 cents apiece. Standard colors of silver, white and black are offered, with custom colors available for $5 extra. The team needs to raise money for league fees, uniforms, tournament fees and out-of-town expenses, so if you would like to lend your support, please call Mike Hoikka at 354-2144 or Terry Smith at 354-2429.
Oregon XXX coming this summer
Clif Bar has joined forces with Lars Bergstrom and Nolimitz to present the Oregon XXX outdoor extreme series. The Oregon XXX, also sponsored by Ezzy Sails and Da Kine, will bring together the sports of windsurfing, wave sailing, freestyle and jumping into one big event, starting with the Wave Bash at Pistol River June 20-24.
