Columbia Gallery opening, chalk art highlight event

The Hood River Downtown Business Association and Columbia Arts are very pleased to invite local residents and visitors to the October First Friday Artwalk at downtown area businesses and galleries.

This month’s event, which begins at 5 p.m., offers a number of visual and audio treats to the general public. During this event, dozens of local artists exhibit their creations at downtown Hood River businesses, while local musicians perform at various locations in the downtown area.

Highlights for the October event include the 3rd Annual Chalk Art Contest. This Hood River Downtown Business Association and Columbia Arts sponsored contest is open to children and adults, and runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Artists must register in front of the future home of the Columbia Center for the Arts (Cascade and 3rd streets). Artists will receive an assigned section in downtown Hood River. There is no fee to enter, but chalk will be available for purchase.

Art and music highlights include Blue Ackerman at the Hood River Wine Bar, Joan Chase at Windermere/Glenn Taylor, Elizabeth Anderson at Gorge Dog, John Weinland at Yum Gallery, Paulo Montufar at Hood River Stationers, Dave and Katy White with music by Scott Bergeron at the Hood River Hotel, book signing of “Kidding Around the Gorge” at Waucoma Bookstore, Sheila Ford Richmond at Studio 8, Darryl Lloyd at Cascade Travel, Laurie Decrow at G. Williker’s Toy Shoppe, Rene Fragall at Pass-Times, Meg Whitman and music by Rich and Connie Dunnington at At Home on Oak Street, Paul Lestock and Carol Balyozian at A Salon Day Spa Boutique and a Stones Remount event at Hood River Jewelers. Essentially Oil — Submissions by Regional Artists will be presented at the Columbia Art Gallery, beginning at 7 p.m. The Gallery is now located in their new temporary location, 101 Fourth Street.

The Columbia Art Gallery show is curated by Georgette Jones and Cathleen Rehfeld. Abruzzo’s Italian Grill and Panzanella are donating refreshments for the opening night festivities.

The artists’ reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Featured artists are Arthur Higgins, Eric Jacobsen, Cathleen Rehfeld, Harry Wheeler, Mark Nillson, Arnold Zweertz, Georgette Jones and Jane Pagliarulo.

Gallery hours continue to be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday and noon to 5 on Monday. Call the gallery at 541-386-4512 for additional information.

Also during First Friday:

The Wine Sellers at 514 State St., will honor different Hood River County schools each First Friday. The special events, which will also feature wine tastings, run from 3 to 6 p.m. and all sales during those hours will yield a percentage to go to the schools so specified that day.

Schools highlighted this week are Cascade Locks and Pine Grove Elementary. Erin Schechtel of Erin Glenn Vineyards will be pouring wines of this newest area winery and music will be by Sawcordius.

Check out Saturday Market on First Friday as Hood River Saturday Market vendors and musicians come together for a sneak peak. Located on Cascade Street, it’s a smaller version of Saturday Market to sample while taking in all the sights and sounds of First Friday.
