Tony Furtado coming to HR

Acclaimed "new-grass" artist Tony Furtado will bring his slide guitar-driven blues tunes to the River City Saloon on Sunday, Sept. 21. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. and a cover charge will apply.

When Tony Furtado and the American Gypsies hit Hood River, their new album will have just been out for nine days. Furtado will be in Hood River on Sept. 21 at the River City Saloon., playing in support of their release “Live Gypsy.”

While the Gorge has known Tony Furtado from his early days as a banjo player and innovator, in recent years he has become enamored with the slide banjo and guitar. The band does head off into strange territory on Live, allowing Furtado to show off his chops in the middle of psychedelic and extended jams. Furtado sounds best on his most aggressive ("Oh Berta," ) and softest ("Bottle of Hope") pieces, while he does an amazing cover of that ancient murder tale, "Stagger Lee" - a perfect vehicle for his sound.
