Mitey Mite race season off to a good start

January 17

The Cooper Spur Race Team is off to a strong start, posting 20 top-five finishes by racers of all ages at last Sunday’s Kids Kandahar GS at Mt. Hood Meadows.

The Kandahar, sponsored this year by Meadows Race Team and Multnomah Athletic Club, offered the CSRT coaches their first glimpse at the talent on the four Mt. Hood Mitey Mite teams.

“Our boys this year are very strong, taking the top four places in the 11-12 division, five of the top six in the 9-10’s, and first and second in ages 7-8,” according to head coach Jesse Scroggins. “The girls were just as dominating, with first and second in the 11-12, and first and third in the 7-8 division. We just have fewer girls.”

The 8-and-under contestants raced one run on a shorter course. Interestingly, many teams have experienced a surge of younger racers, with 58 kids competing in the 7-8-year-old category, and 29 in the 6-and under division.

CSRT’s Kellie Clarke took second place in 6-and-under girls with a time of 56.30 seconds, while team mates Angela Bruggeman placed fourth (64.67) and Samantha Davies seventh (75.08).

For the 6-and-under boys, Zach Mikkelson placed fourth at 50.51 seconds, followed by Kiefer Kreps in fifth (51.39), Kellan Duffy in sixth (55.75), Montana Kurahara in seventh (57.15), William Lamer in eighth (57.18), and Torseen Brown in ninth (61.95).

For CSRT, Kathleen Daly-Jensen placed first (41.61) in 7-8 girls, Addie Rouse placed third (44.07), Raquel Bruggeman fifth (44.41), Rachel Osmundsen in seventh (47.88), and Molly Clarke in eighth (48.09).

Cade Scroggins placed first for 7-8 boys, with a fast time of 36.62 seconds, followed by Dalton Tuor in second with 40.40, and Matthias Brunner in sixth with 44.39.

The 9-13 year-olds raced two GS runs from the top of “Stadium” (off Meadows yellow chair), with a steep, intimidating start that caused many racers to miss the first few gates.

The 9-10 boys held strong, taking five of the top six places. Michael Allen placed first with a combined time of 1:12.18, Kristoff Fowler was second (1:12.33), Aidan Daly-Jensen third (1:12.45), Will Bergen fifth (1:17.32), and Pierce Whalen sixth (1:17.86).

Meanwhile, Julia Bruggeman held it together for the 9-10 girls, placing seventh with a time of 1:25.25.

The boys were also tough in the 11-12 age group, with Isaac Bubb of CSRT skiing the fastest individual and combined times of the day with a total 1:08.41. He was followed by David Hinton in second place (1:12.02), Colton Swearingen in third (1:15.27), Ethan Cranmer in fourth (1:17.50), and Jordy Mallon in eighth (1:20.04).

The 11-12 girls also had a quality showing, with Jacqueline Wiles taking first with a combined time of 1:12.63, Toby Carratt in second (1:15.70), Lauren Lloyd in ninth (1:22.54), and Kelsie Scroggins in tenth (1:23.15).

In the 13-year-old category, Forrest Cranmer placed first with a time of 1:13.51, followed by Aaron Mallon in second at 1:19.77.
