Oscar Stenberg gets the Golden Boot

Local sports advocate receives recognition for his commitment to Hood River soccer

November 9, 2005

The Golden Boot Award is intended to recognize individuals in the area who have shown outstanding support, dedication and commitment to improving, supporting and facilitating soccer programs throughout the community. Presented by the Dynamos Soccer Club, the golden boot is passed to a new individual once a year by the previous year’s recipient.

Jim Tedford passed the boot on to Oscar Stenberg this week, saying simply, “This is for all you’ve done for soccer in Hood River.”

The boot isn’t really gold. Actually, it’s nothing more than an old left-footed soccer cleat spray painted a few times over and strung with a funky gold lace. It’s the symbolism that matters, and it gains value with each person who receives it.

“What an honor,” Stenberg said as he accepted the boot. “It’s truly an honor to receive something like this.”

Current Dynamos Soccer president Alex Cook offered the following comments about Stenberg: “Oscar has been teaching, coaching, refereeing, mentoring, and leading the Hood River community in so many areas which affect our youth. He is currently a teacher, the athletic director at Horizon Christian School, and his commitment to sportsmanship is probably unmatched in the area, as evidenced by his offering of lecture classes in sportsmanship for youth to local coaches last year, at his own expense … In my limited time in Hood River, it seems there are few people whose lives have not been touched by ‘The Big O.’”
