Sean Baker receives top wrestling honor

November 5, 2005

Local wrestler and Hood River Valley High School freshman Sean Baker recently received the Oregon Wrestling Challenge Award. The award is given to only one wrestler in the state per age group, based on performances at several tournaments throughout last season. In the schoolboy age group (13-14 years old), Baker took first place in five out of five tournaments he wrestled at 115 pounds, including the state Folkstyle, state Freestyle and state Greco Roman tournaments.

The triple-crown state champion had this to say about the award: “I’m just happy that all my hard work paid off. Thanks coach (Keith) Bassham, (Mark) Brown and AirTime Wrestling for helping me get there. And thanks to my parents for their support.”

With high school wrestling season starting practice on Monday, Baker will be gunning for a spot on the varsity team at 119 or 125 pounds.
