Mitch Sanders moves to Tigard

June 29, 2005

Mitch Sanders is no longer Hood River Valley High School's head football coach. After six years of service to the program, Sanders has moved from Hood River to accept the head football coaching position at Tigard High School. He is already working on hiring a staff there for the upcoming season.

In his time as an Eagles coach, Sanders led his team to the playoff five out of six years, helping establish Hood River as a school to be reckoned with in the Intermountain Conference. He helped establish a new level of excellence and tradition for HRV football.

HRVHS Athletic Director Phil Vesel commented; "I wish Mitch the best in his new job. It will be a great opportunity for him to compete against the best teams in the state every year. I hate to see him leave because he has meant a lot to our kids and our football program."

Football season starts in August for the Eagles, with the notorious daily doubles practice program. Vesel's plan is to hire a new football coach within the next couple of weeks, as the position is already posted on the OSAA website.

"I believe we will have highly qualified applicants because of the success of the program," Vesel commented. "He (Sanders) had a difficult time leaving his players and staff. He will be missed."
