June 29, 2005
Effective June 24: Retention of sturgeon on the Columbia River between The Dalles and John Day Dams is closed. The closure, made by the Oregon and Washington Departments of Fish and Wildlife, follows the June 11 shutting down of sturgeon retention in the Bonneville Pool, which includes waters between Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam.
The sturgeon fishery is managed for a 2005 annual harvest quota of 400 sturgeon in the Dalles Pool and 700 in the Bonneville Pool. Retention is closed when fish and wildlife officials believe those quotas have been met.
Sturgeon retention in Columbia waters between the John Day and McNary Dams is currently still open. Anglers will be allowed to fish for sturgeon on a catch-and-release basis in all waters through the end of the year.
