College, ‘Roots’ exhibit step forward

September 24, 2005

Looking ahead, and looking backward, with progress on two fronts this week:

Congratulations go to two organizations pursuing educational projects in two distinct ways:

* The Fruit Foundation Historical Society and Hood River County Historical Museum, and a lot of dedicated volunteers worked hard to assemble the impressive “Remembering Our Roots” fruit heritage display in Pine Grove over the past two years. The unveiling of the museum on Thursday was a joyous community gathering celebrating an exhibit that does justice to the agricultural traditions and history of the Hood River Valley.

As one visitor commented upon viewing the detailed and engaging artifacts and exhibits, “A lot of people obviously worked very hard to organize this.”

* On Friday, Columbia Gorge Community College officials signed the purchase papers on the 12.5 acres of land on The Heights in Hood River.

Planning can now proceed for construction of the Hood River college campus, with a target completion date in 2008. To put it in perspective, that means this year’s ninth graders could be taking the increasingly popular college preparatory classes at the new college facility by their junior year.

Four years of hard work by the college board, President Frank Toda and his adminstrative team came to a critical point this week with their signatures on the purchase papers. The community has supported the Hood River expansion efforts by backing the construction bonds that made this possible; citizens will have yet another chance to get involved when planning meetings take place next year in Hood River.
