Eagle volleyball shines at home

September 28, 2005

After a tough loss against Summit High School, the Eagles varsity volleyball team fired back with a win against Bend High School in the second match of their double-header Friday evening.

The girls started their first home match of the season strong, defeating Summit 26-24 in the first set.

“We started well,” said head Coach Jennifer Baklenko. “But Summit played stronger after the first set and we didn’t adjust.”

Summit powered ahead to win the final sets 25-15, 25-13 and 25-20. Highlights for the Eagles against Summit included Jamie Abbot’s seven kills and 13 digs, Kendal Cederstam’s six kills and Brianne Rowley’s eight digs.

The Eagles used lessons learned from the first match to improve their tactics against Bend later that evening. With a crowd of local fans echoing encouragements across the gym, the Eagles put on a good show at the net. The first three sets were close, with Hood River winning the first 25-22, losing the second 21-25 and winning a suspenseful third 27-25. With momentum on their side, the girls pulled away in the final set to win 25-19.

“I think we learned a lot about communication,” Baklenko commented. “The girls played hard for each other and they did a great job of adjusting to Bend’s setter attack.”

The girls will face their next three opponents on the road, with matches at Pendleton, Summit and Sherwood, before returning home for four matches starting on Oct. 4.
