Matthew Bergstrom broke three Hood River Valley Swim Team records on his way to a state championship performance at the recent 10-and-under State Swimming Championships in Albany. In the 10-year-old boys division, Bergstrom took first in the state in the 50-meter Butterfly, second in the 50-meter freestyle, third in the 100-meter freestyle, fourth in the 50-meter breast stroke, and eight in the 50-meter back stroke.
About 250 swimmers from Oregon and South West Washington participated in the “qualifiers-only” swim meet. Along with Matt, Scott Bergstrom, Mariah Rawding, and Jake Rawding competed for the Hood River Ospreys.
In the 10-year-old Scott finished with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter free, sixth place finishes in the 100-meter butterfly and the 50-meter free, seventh in the 100-m free, and 13th in the 100-meter back.
In the 9-year-old girls division, Mariah Rawding placed in the top 15 in seven individual disciplines, including a third place finish in the 50-meter butterfly, a sixth place finish in the 100-meter butterfly, and an eighth place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Jacob Rawding, swimming in the 9-year-old boys division, placed 16th in the 50-meter butterfly.
The Ospreys also sent six swimmers to an invitational meet in Pendleton. The following are highlights are from the meet:
Erin Jones: Placed first in the 1500-meter free, first in the 200-meter free, first in the 400-meter free and second in the 100-meter free.
Sebastiana Lynch: Placed 15th in the 100-back.
Jesse Miles: Placed 10th in the 100-free, and 11th in the 50-meter breast and the 50-meter fly.
Anna Phillips: Placed 12th in the 1500-meter free and 15th in the 200-meter breast.
Jordan Phillips: Placed first in the 1500-free, fourth in the 200-breast, and fifth in the 400-free.
Justin Phillips: Placed 17th in the 50-meter breast and the 100-meter breast.
