Echoes as loud as Mount St. Helens filled the Hood River Aquatic Center Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Fans and swimmers from 19 teams splashed, screamed and cheered each other on in the 2005 Hood River Summer Invitational Swim Meet.
The pool took abuse as swimmers from Mt. Hood, The Dalles, Columbia/Willamette, Woodburn, Pendleton, La Grande, Caldwell, Oregon City, Hood River and the Tornadoes swim teams kicked, paddled and pushed their way into 45 pages of meet results. Timekeepers were dizzy, two each in eight lanes.
In the end, the Hood River Valley Swim Team finished number two (boys) and number three (girls) on the list, with memorable performances from everyone— 63 Ospreys in all.
Seventeen Ospreys swam in their first meet ever, about half posted personal records and one placed first in seven events.
“All our new athletes who competed in their first meet this weekend should be very proud of themselves,” Coach Shelly Rawding commented. “It takes a lot of guts to stand up on that starting block in front of all those people and perform, and all our swimmers did great. We had a few disqualifications, but it is always a learning experience for the athlete when that happens… Jacob, Daniel and JJ (Mears) are great kids who have just moved to the area. They support each other tremendously and are a joy to have on our team. Kylie Webb is another all star athlete who from her first meet has really taken off in the pool. She loves to chase her brother, and Connor is great sport about it.”
Dishing out the toughest competition at the meet, 14-year-old Erin Jones finished first in seven out of eight divisions.
“She is a wonderful person and a terrific athlete that can swim every event,” Rawding said about Jones. “She likes to work on the events she is not as strong in, and this summer she has had some great time improvements in her off strokes (backstroke and butterfly). She’s going to be a huge asset to the HRV High School team this winter.”
