Stan Campbell set the Hood River Valley High School high jump record in 1991. His 6’3” leap was the highest by an Eagle for 15 years until, on Friday, HRVHS sophomore Jesse Page bettered Campbell’s jump by an inch to set a new school record and win the event at the Pendleton meet.
The Eagles traveled to the farthest-east Intermountain Conference school Friday morning for the track team’s first meet of the season. With 15 teams in attendance at the Pendleton Invitational, the Eagles had a solid showing, with the girls’ team finishing third overall and the boys fourth.
“We had a lot of really good performances and personal records,” said coach Shawn Meyle. “Overall the kids competed quite well for this early in the season and a lot of them are beginning right where they left off at the end of last year.”
Highlighting the meet were several first-place finishes. For the boys, Page, a transfer student at HRVHS, won the high jump with his 6’4” performance and sophomore Leo Castillo won both the 1,500 and 3,000 meter events. Castillo, who had a state qualifying cross country season last fall, lived up to his expectations as standout distance runner.
Two-time state cross country runner Melissa Kauffman also lived up to her expectations in the distance events: she won the 1,500 and took second in the 3,000. Pole-vaulter McKenna Hering looks to better her sixth place finish at last season’s state meet in the event with the best view. She swept the Pendleton meet, clearing 10 feet for a first place finish.
