Greetings. My name is Ben and this is your sports page. As the new sports guy at the Hood River news, introductions are probably in order.
Hood River, meet Ben. Ben, meet Hood River.
That was simple enough, but perhaps you would like a few more details.
I come to you from the University of Portland, where I spent three years on the sports staff at the school paper, and from where I graduated in May. I’m a sports junkie, and probably would have had an easier time in school if I had cleaned some of the sports trivia knowledge out of my brain to make room for academic stuff. But no matter, I made it and even have a nice fancy diploma to prove it.
Last month I came to Hood River for the first time to interview for the sports reporter job and instantly liked the paper and the town. Over the past week, as I bumbled my way around town trying to find the events I’m covering, I’ve grown to like it even more.
Now that I recognize street names and a few landmarks, my next goal is to gain an understanding of windsurfing and kiteboarding, and hopefully even give them a try.
In the coming weeks I’ll be making a few tweaks here and there to the sports page, trying a few new things and maybe giving you different perspectives as I learn the ins and outs of the Hood River sports scene.
As I get settled in, this is also your chance to have an impact on this section. If you like what I’m doing, let me know, if you hate it, let me know as well. If you have an event you would like to see in the paper, or have an idea for a story, please feel free to let me know.
My e-mail is email@example.com and my phone number is 386-1234, ext. 214, and I’m always open to suggestions.
I look forward to meeting many new faces, and I’m sure you’ll be seeing me around town a lot this year.
If you should see a tall guy with a camera and notepad looking a little lost, please point him in the right direction. Getting the sports page out on time the next day may depend on it.
