Eagle boys’ soccer rakes in all-league honors

After making into the second round of the state playoffs, several Hood River Valley boys’ soccer players got their reward this week for top performances.

Two Eagles were named to the Mt. Hood Conference All-League first team, three to the second team and one received an honorable mention.

Juan Villegas and Diego Diaz were both named to the league’s first team.

Villegas, the team’s senior co-captain guided the team’s offense and set up scores from his midfielder position.

Coach Doug Beveridge credits Villegas for helping to set the tone for for Eagle’s success this season.

Diaz came off the bench for the Eagles this season as a sophomore, and provided a spark of speed and scoring ability whenever he got onto the pitch. He was also the league’s second leading scorer.

Ernesto Marquez, Moe Bruekmann and goalkeeper Nathan Ponce were named to the league’s second team.

Marquez teamed with Villegas in the midfield to give the Eagles a potent senior combination as well as contributing as a defender at various points in the season, Bruekmann came up with several clutch goals and assists fro the Eagles in the playoffs and was a solid contributor all season long as a defender and midfielder.

Ponce proved to be a steadying force in goal and anchored the team’s defense. Central Catholic’s Ben Summers was named the league’s top goalkeeper.

In his wrap-up of the season Beveridge said that Ponce had “a great year.”

Jesus Delgado, the league’s leading scorer, received an honorable mention for his efforts.

Player of the year honors went to Central Catholic’s Abe Ichino, while Rams coach Steve Ancheta was named coach of the year.
