It took a little extra time to do it, but the Horizon Hawks boys soccer team is the 1A tournament champions.
The Hawks went into a penalty kick shootout with Open Door after a 0-0 tie during regulation, and emerged with a 5-4 win.
Open Door had a chance to tie the shootout with their last kick but Horizon goalie Cameron Root knocked it down to preserve the win.
The tournament presents the only chance many of the 1A schools get at postseason play as they have to compete with larger schools for state playoff births.
Lago feels that the tournament is good for the community, and a good chance for the 1A schools to get some postseason recognition.
“It’s something we need to have. Period,” Lago said.
To get to the final the Hawks had to defeat Gorge rival Cascade Locks in their first game, 4-1, and the beat Ukiah 5-1 in the second round.
This is the third straight season the Horizon has been involved in a penalty shootout to decide a game.
Nick Dietz and Stephen Stenberg lead the Hawks through the tournament as they each tallied four goals and two assists.
Phillip Stenberg and David Ravianek each scored two goals, and Bobby Cofrances added one. Josh Boyden added a pair of assists for the Hawks.
Horizon players made up almost half of the All-Tournament team, with six players receiving all-tournament honors.
The All-Tournament team was made up of: David Rovianek, Horizon Christian; Amanda Zubrick, Central Christian; J.J. Ritchie, Central Christian; Josh Boyden, Horizon Christian; Philip Stenberg, Horizon Christian; Ben Juhasz, Open Door; Marcu Franco, Ukiah; Seth Linquist, Damascus Christian; Zach Powell, Open Door; Nicholas Dietz, Horizon Christian; Renatlo Brito, Open Door; Stephen Stenberg, Horizon Christian; Cameron Root (Goalkeeper), Horizon Christian.
