Erin Jones is not done running yet.
The Hood River Valley sophomore clocked in an 11th-place finish at the 6A girls’ cross country meet at Lane Community College in Eugene over the weekend, which is good enough to qualify for the Nike Border Clash on Nov. 18.
The Border Clash is an annual race between the top 40 runners in Oregon and Washington held at the Nike campus in Beaverton.
Jones jumped up eight spots from her state finish last year and shaved 10 seconds off her time with a 19:21 finishing time. She ran a 6:14 pace on her way to the qualifying time.
Leo Castillo came close to qualifying on the boys side, but just missed the cut with a 17th place finish. To qualify for the Border Clash runners needed to finish in the top 14.
However, Castillo posted a dramatic improvement over last year’s state time, moving up 25 spots from last year and finishing with a 16:32, 40 seconds better than last year.
Central Catholic’s Taylor Morgan won the boys’ 6A meet while Sheldon’s Casey Masterson won for the girls.
Senior Melissa Kauffman, making her third and final state appearance as an Eagle, crossed the line 65th for the 6A girls, a solid finish to her time at Hood River Valley.
Kauffman finished with a 20:48 time, setting a 6:42 pace over the course.
