Hood River area skiers longing to hit the slopes got a little relief over the weekend. Not only could they go out and blaze a trail down their own driveway, but they could also get a taste of the cold powdery stuff at Mount Hood as the Cooper Spur ski area opened for the season.
The ski area opened on Saturday after receiving nearly two feet of snow the previous week. Lifts will be operating from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays. They will also be running for night skiing on Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays.
Cooper Spur is in its 80th year of operation but this season marks the first time that Cooper Spur has opened before Mt. Hood Meadows, which is still closed until Highway 35 is repaired. However, Cooper Spur has joined other local ski areas to give Mt. Hood Meadows season pass holders relief until the road is repaired.
Mt. Hood Meadows season pass holders will receive free lift tickets with presentation of their season pass and another form of picture identification.
