After missing out on the first day of the Newberg basketball tournament due to ice in the Gorge, the Hood River Valley Girls basketball team traveled on Wednesday to the tournament to face Rex Putnam.
Despite low shooting percentages and high turnover numbers, the varsity girls came through with a two point, 45-43 victory over the Kingsmen.
“We were our own worst enemy,” Coach Phil Hukari commented. “We simply could not take care of the ball and when we did our shots would just not go in.”
After gaining a two point lead at half time, the Eagles came out flat in the third quarter and were outscored 14 points to eight.
“We got tough on defense and controlled the boards in the fourth quarter,” said Hukari.
The turnaround helped the girls score 16 points in the quarter to Putnam’s 10, which was just enough to grab the win.
Brianne Rowley had 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles defensively. Scoring leaders were Meredith Danko with 11, Abby Walters with nine, Chelsey Elliott with seven and Jamie Abbott with six.
Next up for the varsity girls, now 4-3 overall, is a home game on Friday, Dec. 30 against Madison High School. Varsity starts at 7 p.m., JV at 5:15 p.m.
