Last year at this time the Horizon boys’ soccer team saw its hopes for a state playoff berth end in a match played through driving winds and horizontal rain.

This year they kept their chances alive when they rained corner kicks on Corbett to continue to drive toward a state playoff berth.

The Hawks converted two Nick Dietz corner kicks into scores, and stifled Corbett defensively on their way to 3-1 win and second round date with North Clackamas.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Dietz sent a corner kick curling into the box for Stephen Stenberg who was able to jump high enough to head it into the goal.

The Corbett defense kept the lead at one until 15 minutes into the second half when Dietz threaded a pass to Josh Boyden who headed it in to put the Hawks up 2-0.

Dietz and Boyden hooked up again 20 minutes later when Boyden was on the receiving end of a Dietz corner kick and booted off the left post for a 3-0 lead.

The Hawks had several other chances throughout the game to stretch their lead, but had several shots go just wide of the goal and had several others bounce off the post.

Corbett got on the board in the 77th minute when a forward took advantage of communication lapse in the Horizon defense, but by that point it was too late for a comeback.

“This was a great for the guys,” Horizon Coach Mark Lago said. “They came in here knowing this was a do or die and they came out fighting.”

With the win Horizon moved up to No. 9 in the weekly Oregonprepsports.com 3A/2A/1A state poll.

Lago gave credit to a maturing defense for helping secure the win.

“Our defense carried the game,” Lago said. “Today we just had the better side.”

Horizon will now travel to North Clackamas for an Oct. 31 match.

Horizon is also playing in the 1A tournament this weekend.

The winner receives a state playoff berth, while the loser is eliminated. Game time is 3 p.m.
