Horizon girls pick up first win

Before this season it had been awhile before Horizon school had fielded a girls’ soccer team, and before yesterday, to best of Athletic Director Oscar Stenberg’s memory, they had never won.

That all changed yesterday when defender Christine Borton kicked in a goal from 18 yards out off a corner kick to propel the Hawks to a 1-0 victory over Goldendale.

“We had a team several years ago that I don’t think scored their whole season” Stenberg said in trying to recall if a Horizon girls’ team had won before.

Coach Ben Saur said he didn’t know it was the first win ever for a Horizon girls squad, but that he would take it regardless.

“The game was fun,” Saur said. “It was good to be matched up against another girls’ team.”

The team had played both of its previous matches this season against Trout Lake’s JV team which was a co-ed team.

Saur said that the Hawks had several chances to score throughout the game and kept up the pressure on Goldendale.

“This is their very first win,” Stenberg said. “It was really cool.”
