HRV wrestling wins Stevenson tourney

The Hood River Valley wrestling team continued its strong string of tournament performances by taking home the first-place trophy at the nine- team Columbia Gorge Wrestling Invitational at Stevenson High School last weekend.

Sean Baker was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler for his performance at the 135-pound weight class.

The Eagles had finalists in seven of 14 weight classifications and won four weight class titles.

Top finishers for Hood River included Obie Schwartzel with fourth place at 112 pounds; Gage Morris with second place and Gary Thompson with fifth place at 119 pounds; Julio Avila with third place and Thomas Eddy with fifth place at 125 pounds; Brandon Gass with third place at 130 pounds; Sean Baker with first place at 135 pounds; Ben Eddy with second place and Taren Bennet with fifth place at 140 pounds; Aaron Mallon with second place at 145 pounds; Bill Hunter with third place at 152 pounds; Joe Johnson with first place at 171 pounds; Lucas Mondragon with first place at 189 pounds; Cameron Kiyokawa with fourth place at 215 pounds, and Alex Titus at first place in the heavyweight classification.

The Eagles will now try to get back on track in dual meets after back-to-back losses to David Douglas and Reynolds when they face Centennial in their final home meet of the season this Thursday.
