HRV track gets best of TDW in dual meet

Lupe Santillan has a good reason for having such a big grin as she clears the final hurdle in the 100-meter hurdles Tuesday afternoon –– she finished first in the event with a time of 18.79 seconds.

It feels like the spring track season has just started, and yet in many ways it's almost over.

The Hood River Valley track team hosted its only home meet of the season Tuesday and beat The Dalles-Wahtonka Eagle-Indians on both sides of the team scores.

The HRV boys won 79-54 and the girls won 102-33.

The Eagles now head down the home stretch with just four varsity events remaining until the district meet in The Dalles May 12-13.

They saw continued improvement and exciting finishes in several events during their win over the Eagle-Indians Tuesday.

In the shot put Angie Titus knocked off state title favorite Leah Wilson by two inches, besting her with a throw of 38-3.50 to 38-1.50.

The throw was a season best by 4 feet for Titus.

In the 4x400-meter relay, HRV's Ian McNaughton was neck-and-neck with TDW's Colton Rowland in the final 100 meters before McNaughton got the edge in the final 10 meters and then collapsed to the ground to catch his breath after crossing the finish line.

Yonny Castillo pulled off an impressive triple-feat in winning the 3,000 and 1,500 meter runs and helping the HRV 4x400 team to a victory.

Tracy Mok took first place in the javelin, getting a season best by over 8 feet with a throw of 108-04.
