Winterfest happens Jan. 29
Skamania County Facilities and Recreation is gearing up to host Winterfest 2011 at Oldman Pass Sno-Park on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The annual event invites participants to celebrate winter with a flurry of free and fun activities in the beautiful Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Bundle up the family, pack up the snow toys, and enjoy traditional snow play activities, including sledding, snowshoeing, snow skating and a snowman building contest. Visitors will see a backcountry safety presentation offered by Wind River Search and Rescue. Learn how to stay safe and warm while adventuring in the snowy winter woods. Back by popular demand, the event will feature the Kids' Cool Creation Table, brought to you by the Community After School Program. Join them for chilly crafts and winter wonderland fun. Cocoa and coffee, kindly provided by A&J Select, and hot dog and chili concessions will be available to warm up around the bonfire. Ping Pong Tourney in the Gorge
Join The Dalles Ping Pong Club for a fun day of ping pong on Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Civic Auditorium. The games begin at 9 a.m. with the advanced player's bracket consisting of "better than average" player competing in a triple elimination tournament, followed by intermediate/average players and finishing up with beginners of all ages. Non-players are encouraged to stop by to watch the action. Entry fee is $15 for adults, 12 and under $10. The tournament is a benefit for the Civic Auditorium. United Way benefit concert
The United Way of the Columbia Gorge will host a benefit concert on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. featuring The Rick Hulett Band, a fun quartet with lots of firepower and a great groove. The event will be held in the soon to be new Cascade Acupuncture Center clinic location in The Dalles (1712 E. 12th St.). Suggested donation at the door is $5-$20. There will be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses, wine by Dry Hollow Vineyards and appetizers by ANZAC Tea Parlour.
