Exit 64 project rounds curve for October finish

June 25, 2011

"It's pile driving time," at exit 64 on Interstate 84, ODOT spokesman Mark Baker said Friday.

Moore Excavation crews demolished the westbound portion of the exit 64 bridge on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Crews will continue excavating the banks, to widen Highway 35 underneath, and then start driving the piles that will support the new westbound bridge.

That structure will mirror the new eastbound bridge, completed this spring. Motorists can expect minimal traffic interruption, and in an unusual step, crews will work Saturdays this summer, to keep on schedule, Baker said. However, all work in traffic lanes must be done by noon on Fridays.

"There shouldn't' be any traffic impact; though you will see more equipment going back and forth, so there may be short delays so something can cross a roadway; but no significant mobility impacts," Baker said.

The exit 64 upgrade is on schedule for completion by Oct. 22, when traffic on I-84 will return to two lanes each direction, and access to and from exit 63 is restored before the 18-month bridge project began in 2010.

Merging and exiting between I-84 exits 63 and 64 remains prohibited. Throughout construction, eastbound access to exit 64 is via exit 63, and westbound access to exit 63 is via exit 64.
