It's taken them a little longer to get their honors than the previous two classes, but the fourth Hood River Valley High School Hall of Fame class will be getting its due this fall.
After last year's induction was canceled for scheduling conflicts and tight budgets, the event returns this year.
Festivities even get started a little earlier than normal this year with the Hall of Fame golf tournament going Aug. 20 at Indian Creek Golf Course.
"We moved the golf tournament to Aug. 20 to make it easier for a lot of our golfing orchardists to participate," said HRVHS athletic director Keith Bassham. "Now that we moved everything back to October with the Hall of Fame we are not going to be so worried about the weather."
The Hall of Fame class features a number of firsts: first state champions, first district champions and first-team all-state members.
Teams being inducted include the 1964 Hood River Blue Dragons football team, which finished second to Grant in the state in a hard-fought 7-6 contest; the 1968 Wy'east boys basketball team, the first hoops squad from the school to win a district championship, beating Jesuit for the title; and the 1972 HRVHS boys ski team, the first team from the school win a state title.
Individual honorees are:
Willard Schilling - The late long time community sports leader and principal at Hood River Junior High and May street. Helped turn Hood River High School girls tennis into a state power in the early 1960s and developed many talented track and field athletes in the 1960s and 70s.
Bob Thomas - All-state leader of the 1968 Wy'east district champion boys basketball team
Ken Ayers - The first state wrestling champion from Hood River Valley High School, winning the 148-pound class title in 1984
Jeff Mansur - All-state pitcher for the 1988 Hood River Valley baseball state championship team
Dana Husby - Three-time state pole vault champion at HRVHS, in 1998, '99, and 2000.
In addition to those honorees who were selected to be honored last year, three additional members have been added to the class in the time since. The three added members are:
Bethany Pendleton - HRVHS state swimming champ. Graduated in 2000 and placed at state in all four years. Went on to become an All-American collegiate swimmer and tried out for the Olympic team.
Ron Jenson and David Jensen - Brothers who starred in track and field for Cascade Locks High School in the mid-1960s. Ron won the 1963 state championship in the shot put and discus while placing second as an individual at the class 1B championships, while brother David followed with a state championship in the shot put in 1965.
The inductees will be honored at halftime of the Oct. 7 HRVHS football game against Pendleton and then will be inducted the following night during a dinner at the Gorge Room at Best Western Hood River Inn.
