'A good day' as Eagles send 20 to state track and field

May 18, 2011

Speed. Endurance.

Joy. Disappointment.

Thunder. Lightning.

That was the inaugural Columbia River Conference district track meet in six words.

Here is one number of greater importance to the Hood River Valley track team: Twenty.

That's how many competitors the Eagles are sending to this weekend's state meet in Eugene.

"We were shocked to get 20 people in," HRV coach Donnie Herneisen said. "It's a bit of an adjustment for us."

Those adjustments include not only having to reserve a few more vans to get to Hayward Field, but also a slew of different events from what the Eagles are normally used to.

The Eagles' strength in recent years has been distance races, with a few field stars thrown in. It would be fair to label this season as the year of the sprinter.

The Eagles are sending all four of their relay teams to the state meet, including a 4x100 boys relay team that tied the school record with its time, and a girls 4x100 team which got a heroic anchor performance from Marlee Orgain to qualify second.

Orgain ran down Pendleton's Sara Townsley and erased a dozen meter lead in the final 100 to get the relay team on to state.

Orgain also won the 100 meter race with a time of 13:19, slowed by blasting headwinds down the stretch, but still enough to win.

"I had a good day," said a grinning Orgain Monday.

Ian McNaughton pulled a similar feat in the 400 relay as he passed Colton Rowland in the backstretch to give HRV the win.

McNaughton is also going in the 200 and 400 meter races, and will be joined by teammate Milo Herman in the 200.

The Eagles went 1-2 in two boys sprint events, with Herman and Ryan Bales going in the 100 meter dash and McNaughton and Herman in the 200. They just missed the feat again in the 400, with McNaughton taking first and Keirnan Buddendeck third.

By qualifying in a pair of individual events and a relay, Herman moved from the middle of the pack, where he spent most of the last two years after dealing with injuries, to the state top times list and a chance at the medal stand.

"It was just hard work and keeping at it," the junior said. "Last year I hurt my hamstring and couldn't run."

The sprints even managed to finish in dramatic fashion. With a thunderstorm rolling in Saturday afternoon, the HRV 4x400 relay team won the final race of the day minutes before rain and lightning came rushing down from the sky.

"We had to take down our tents and everything in the pouring rain," Herneisen said.

The sprints were not the only event HRV went 1-2 in. In the pole vault Olivia Campbell won the competition easily and has a good chance to be the top finisher at state.

Meanwhile Zoe Peterson took second place in a jump off at 8-6 to take the second spot -- after returning from the track to help the Eagle 4x100 relay team qualify.

In other field events, Dalton Frazier won the boys long jump while Tracy Mok took second in the javelin to qualify for state.

In keeping with the tradition, the Eagles are also sending a distance runner. Grace Viuhkola qualified in the 3,000 meters for the first time after pulling away down the backstretch to win the event.

The Eagles had hoped to possibly win the event as a team, but Herneisen said their lack of depth in several events wound up costing them points.

Instead the Eagles finished second on the girls side and fourth on the boys side.

Still, considering he had to scramble to find more transportation to get his team to Eugene, Herneisen was not too unhappy.

"The positives far outweigh the negatives," he said.
