Eagles girls down Milwaukie, advance to state

November 9, 2011

Three minutes into their game against Milwaukie Friday the Hood River Valley girls soccer team could already feel it: They were going back to state.

Jessica Sedano scored moments into the game and Sarah Clark added another goal early in the second half and the Eagles defeated Milwaukie 2-0 to earn a second consecutive trip to the state playoffs and their third in four years.

The previous two trips the Eagles drew games they stood little chance of winning, taking on 6A No. 1 Clackamas in 2008 and then playing at North Eugene last year. Both times the Eagles lost in the first round, and they would like to change that this year.

On Tuesday night the Eagles were set to travel to No. 4-ranked Crescent Valley of Corvallis.

Against Milwaukie, Sedano was in the right place at the right time after an Emily Thompson shot was deflected off a defender. Sedano quickly got to it and punched in between the keeper and the right side post for the goal.

Milwaukie threatened a few times during the remainder of the half, but the Eagle defense kept them contained and shut down.

"Meagan (Winans) and Dom (Figueroa) did a good job coming off their lines in goal and clearing the ball," HRV coach Kevin Haspela said.

Moments into the second half senior Sarah Clark scored her first goal of the season on a perfectly placed free kick which sailed just over the Milwaukie keeper's hands and into the net.

Later in the half she nearly had an assist on a second goal when an indirect kick bounced off the crossbar and rolled over the goal line just before Thompson put it into the net. The goal was disallowed because the ball crossed the goal line on an indirect kick.

It did not wind up mattering, though, as the Eagle defense continued to shut down the Mustangs on the way to the win.

The Eagles were ready and confident to play at Crescent Valley Tuesday night.

"They sound a lot like us," Haspela said. "They will be a different kind of team than we saw against Milwaukie."

Crescent Valley finished second in the Midwestern League this season and played several common opponents with HRV along the way.

The Raiders lost to Sherwood 3-0 (Sherwood beat HRV 8-0), beat West Albany 1-0 (HRV lost to the Bulldogs 2-1) and beat Woodburn 4-0 (HRV beat Woodburn 2-0). Crescent Valley went 7-6-1.
