Four scores as Eagle girls rally past Bucks

October 8, 2011

The Hood River Valley girls soccer team could have been an infomercial for the Infinity Razor Tuesday afternoon: Always sharp.

After beating Woodburn in his team's non-league finale last week, coach Kevin Haspela was worried it would take his team some time to find its offensive instinct.

He needn't have worried.

The Eagles rallied from an early deficit to beat Pendleton 4-2 and win its Columbia River Conference opener.

The Eagles got a pair of goals from Kristin Lago and one each from Roxy Gomez and Emily Thompson.

After the Eagles fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Heather Hillmick they quickly bounced back.

Roxy Gomez scored the equalizer - her third goal in two games - and then Kristin Lago put the Eagles ahead going into halftime.

"They really woke up and played harder," Haspela said of his team. "It's nice to see the work in practice pay off on the field."

The Eagles got some insurance in fast and furious fashion late in the match.

After just missing on a shot moments earlier, Lago ran a perfect give-and-go with Emily Thompson and fired the ball into the net.

In the final 15 minutes, Thompson sealed the win for HRV when she made a sliding shot that perfectly slotted between the keeper and the far post.

Hillmick scored her second goal in the final two minutes, but it made no difference in the result.

In addition to her two goals, Thompson also had a pair of assists in the game, as did Kirra Paulus, who assisted on Lago's first goal as well as Thompson's score.

The Eagles play at Hermiston Tuesday and host The Dalles-Wahtonka Thursday.
