Horizon soccer opens with 2-0 win

September 14, 2011

Horizon Christian School opened its 2011 soccer season Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win against the visiting Westside Christian School junior varsity.

The Hawks survived a searing Gorge heat wave and continual scoring threats from the Class 3A Eagles during the non-league match.

"We were very fortunate to get the win," coach Oscar Stenberg said. "They had more shots on goal and more corner kicks than us. They're a good team - disciplined in the short game."

Co-captain Mitch Engel, a senior first-year player, earned the shutout in goal for the Hawks. Horizon had a first-half score from senior Gabe Holste and another in the match's closing minutes by freshman Jared Davis.

Stenberg said offensive player of the game honors went to McKenna Roberts for her play at wing, and the defensive leader was Grant Lynn.

"We moved him into the center-mid spot during the game," the coach said of Lynn. "That's like a center-quarterback combination in football. I don't know how many times he got taken out, but he kept bouncing back up.

"The effort, our entire team's effort, was just tremendous."

Holste's goal came in the 36th minute when he made a run and got behind the Eagle defense. Holste was clipped from behind in the penalty box and converted the ensuing penalty kick.

Holste also had a hand in the second goal. His throw-in went to Mason Bloomster, who passed ahead to fellow freshman Davis, who slipped the ball past the Westside keeper.

Horizon hosted Trout Lake on Tuesday and plays at Trout Lake Sept. 20. The Hawks open United Soccer League play Sept. 22 at CS Lewis in Newberg.
