No to Nestlé Water privatization! No!

I am deeply saddened and concerned to see the momentum that is happening in regards to Nestlé's proposed water bottling plant in Cascade Locks. If you think this might be OK and a good thing for the local Cascade Locks economy - or whatever reason you think it might be OK or not a big deal - I would strongly urge you to pull up your Netflix queue and put as number one the movie "Tapped."

It is a horrifyingly informative documentary film on the history of bottled water and its effects on the planet; and if not stopped, the possible effects on the future of our sacred rights in regards to water on this planet.

Please educate yourselves on this matter. I'm certain many of you who think it's no big deal would come to change your minds. Inform yourself sooner than later because they are in their less-than-upfront, sneaky and powerful bulldozing, corporate-greed way pushing big-time to do their thing right here in our neighborhood; and if you wait too long it could be too late and you might be sorry! I know I will!

Elect Tiffany

I was so glad when I heard Gerry Tiffany was going to run for sheriff. Being somewhat familiar with the Hood River County Sheriff's Office I know that Gerry is the absolute best candidate for the position due to his past performance record, many years of experience and training and his excellent moral character.

Politics is never fun or easy, and unfortunately it's not always honest and trustworthy either - I think we have all had our fill of political rhetoric in the news! However, this particular race, often overlooked by many, is so very important to our community and hits very close to home for our family.

Gerry will be a sheriff who will put the needs of the people first and not his own personal agenda; he is not power-hungry or boastful; he gives credit where credit is due by always acknowledging the contributions of other agencies and working to develop a good rapport with those agencies; nor does he want to lead for the sake of leading.

Gerry is a leader, a leader with integrity, whom we can all trust, respect and depend on - that's been proven!

Tiffany has experience

I have worked with all three sheriff's candidates. I am well aware of their qualifications and abilities and you should also, before you vote for your next sheriff. It is a known fact people running for office often make false claims about their qualifications and abilities.

When you look at Sgt. Gerry Tiffany's "Compare the Candidates" in the Hood River newspaper, his website or fliers you can know it is factual. The sheriff candidate's training records are public record and verifiable at the police academy by contacting Rebecca Hannon at 503-378-2328 or dpsst.records@state.or.us.

When you look at Sgt. Gerry Tiffany's qualifications compared to the other candidates, you will have the proof that he is the most qualified for sheriff of Hood River County. I have found Sgt. Gerry Tiffany to be hardworking, diligent in his duties and in no way self-serving.

As a detective sergeant (supervisor) Gerry knows how to take care of his officers. I believe this is in part due to his supervisor experience in the military and private sector. Sgt. Gerry Tiffany has been a supervisor most of his working career. That experience makes him a great leader.

Gerry is not for sale! Please don't let this race be bought by advertisement. Please base it on training and experience. Join me in electing the most qualified candidate for Sheriff of Hood River County. Vote Gerry Tiffany for Sheriff.

Seeing pink

For sure: Now's the time. Quick! Before it gets away! Now is the time in our town, to drive up 13th so you can turn down 12th and take a right on May and a left on Ninth.

Pete's sake, what for? "Pink" is what for. Someone has planted pink trees all over town and at 12th and May you'll see a nice new nest of pink all at once.

English is leader

I support Matt English for sheriff. I believe he will lead the sheriff's office with the community's best interest in mind.

Matt's leadership abilities are unparalleled by most individuals I have worked with in my life, including my time in the military and deployment to Iraq. His work ethic exceeds any expectation one would have to make an outstanding leader in most all types of ventures.

Matt's integrity is likely unmatched by most other peers, both within the law enforcement field and the community in general.

I truly can state that I know Matt would lead the sheriff's office from the front and would energize the team atmosphere, creating a cohesive environment for everyone. Matt is a true leader and is dedicated to our community's future.

Cig butts send message

During Earth Day clean-ups on Sunday, cigarette butts were the most-collected item. These butts not only tarnish our beautiful outdoor spaces, they poison our waterways and are costly to clean up.

Most Hood River residents don't smoke. Yet when kids see places littered with cigarette butts, it sends the message that smoking is the norm. This makes them more likely to give it a try, which is exactly what the tobacco industry wants.

The Surgeon General's recent report noted that the tobacco industry continues to pursue youth as customers. After all, most smokers start before age 18. Kids who smoke miss more school, and are less likely to achieve academically and in the workforce, which is not good for anyone.

We can change this. Please support smoke-free parks, fairs and other public gathering places. If you smoke, please throw your butts away. And if you want to quit, call 800-QUIT-NOW. Learn more at www.smokefreeore-gon.com.

Vote Holste

I am writing to you for the upcoming election. I think we have some prime candidates running for sheriff in Hood River County - especially having Neal Holste running for sheriff.

Neal Holste is an upstanding Christian family man who has dedicated his life to the police force for a number of years. He is well liked and will do an outstanding job for our city.

I think Neal Holste would make an awesome sheriff for the county of Hood River. I hope he wins. It will be the right thing for all of us.
