Cascade Locks The 13th annual Bridge of the Gods Kite Fest held its second and final round of competition Sunday under sunny skies and strong, gusty conditions. The amateur-only event, touted as the longest-running freestyle kiteboarding contest in the U.S., featured two separate weekends of competition this year. A successful pro event was held at the end of July and was followed by Sunday’s amateur and youth contest.
Organized by the Boldstad family of Stevenson, the event brought 35 contestants ranging in age from mini-groms to masters, to the front-row viewing venue of the Stevenson waterfront. Kiters were competing for bragging rights, several thousand dollars in prizes and cash and the experience of participating in a judged freestyle event. Several past Bridge of the Gods winners have gone on to become professional kiteboarders.
