When you’re so tall you could play for the Blazers, it makes for an incredibly leveraged bowling swing, if you know how to use it. And, that’s Matt Hodges’ primary asset: He knows how to translate that big, long arm of his into awesome power.
The tall and slim youngster from The Dalles, who looks down from the 6’ 4” level, really had the pins dancing last week in the Wednesday night Fraternal league at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes, where he notched a huge 741 series on games of 234, 249 and 258. He kept getting better with every toss. Who knows how good he would have been if this had been a 5 gamer! Matt’s 741 series led everybody in scoring last week and he was 150 pins over his average, easily making him our latest Bowler of the Week.
Matt started this season slow, getting comfortable with the game after being away from it for a couple of years and familiarizing himself with the wood lanes that we have here (previously he mostly bowled on synthetics, and there’s a big difference between the two).
Just missing being No. 1 last week was smooth Jeremy Bloom, who scorched the Tuesday Night Mixed league with a mighty fine 738 series that was capped by a super 279 game. Jeremy, also a youngster, joined the upper echelon among the star bowlers in the city just a few years ago and has already posted many tall tallies — a perfect 300 game among them. It’s good to see Jeremy back in the swing of things. We expect to see many more big numbers from him.
As you can tell from the Team of then Week, scores were mighty good last week. You had to shoot 700 just to make the fab five! That’s a pretty tall order, but it’s a testament to the many fine bowlers we have in this area. Great bowling everybody!
Remember, the city bowling tournament starts this coming weekend and runs through Dec. 16. This is the biggie in town. Team, doubles, singles and all-events, handicap format, anybody can win. If you area league bowler, get signed up with Pat Olson at the lanes and give it a try
Oh, and bowling returns to TV on Sunday, Dec. 9. Watch the pros compete in the Bayer men’s World Tour finals on ESPN at 10 a.m. Bowling will be on TV basically every Sunday until April 7. Enjoy!
