The Hood River Port Commission recently approved a number of leases for the Maritime Building. Tenants include Hood River Distillers, Double Mountain Brewing, CRG Freight and Hitch Source.
Much of the space opened up when former tenant Maritime Services Corp. filed for bankruptcy and was purchased by U.S. Joiner.
“This was a sad outcome of an important local company hurt by the recession and European meltdown,” said Port Development Manager Steve Burdick in a port press release. “The port’s challenge was to fill a 39,000-square-foot building that was only part of MSC’s operations.”
Burdick says the port has signed leases to fill all but about 1,000 square feet of space.
Hood River Distillers will lease 21,700 square feet of space in the Maritime Building for warehousing, which allows the distillery to expand its production line at its waterfront facility.
“Due to the change in how we are required to do business with Washington state after the passage of Measure I-1183, we must now carry more (product units) and larger volumes,” explained Lynda Webber, general manager at HRD. “With additional warehouse space, we may explore ways to increase our production.”

Double Mountain’s use of space in the Maritime Building is similar to HRD’s. The company subleased space from Maritime Services for warehousing so that the company could expand production at Double Mountain’s downtown location.
The business recently added 5,000 square feet to its downtown brewery/pub, and has 12,100 square feet of storage at the Maritime Building. Double Mountain’s growth includes 30 new employees, bringing its total to 54. Its conservative estimates are for 30 percent growth in upcoming years, which is impressive for a company that earlier this year celebrated its five-year anniversary. CRG Freight had been subleasing space from MSC for about six years, and continues to lease a small office and warehouse. The company offers freight and delivery services for small and large loads throughout the Gorge, Portland metro area and other destinations in the Northwest.
Owned by Randy McMasters, the company started with one truck seven years ago, and now has six trucks, 10 drivers and three administrative staff, with plans for future growth. Complete information is available at www.crgfreight.com.
Hitch Source is an online store of truck and automobile hitches, towing accessories and automobile racks, with administrative offices in Hood River.
The company, owned by Ken Whiteman, is leasing 1,286 square feet of space at the Maritime Building. Whiteman is also a partner in Pfriem Family Brewing, located in the nearby Halyard Building.

The port and Hood River Distillers are investing in building improvements for tenants, including demolishing old walls, adding a new wall and corridor, heating system upgrades and new lighting systems.
Hale Construction, Kase Construction, Coburn Electric, Tinman Heating and port maintenance staff are performing various pieces of the project.
The replacement of 64 old lights that required high, expensive maintenance and repair was already in the port’s current budget. The cost will be partially offset by an Energy Trust Cash Incentive and will save tenants an estimated $4,000 annually in energy costs, not to mention savings to the port in maintenance costs.
