Eagle swimmers complete final tune-up before district

February 4, 2012

The Hood River Valley senior swimmers dove into the pool and swam their ceremonial half lap of the pool. It could only mean one thing: It's time for district.

The Eagles played host to St. Mary's Thursday night in their final regular season meet before Hood River hosts the Columbia River Conference district championship meet next Saturday.

It has been an abbreviated second half of the season for the Eagles. They first lost a non-league dual meet with Barlow due to the January snowstorm, and then had their annual Hood River Invitational wiped out when conditions did not improve in time.

That left the Eagles with two weeks and two meets to get ready for district. Thursday's meet against St. Mary's, in which only the HRV girls team competed after no other team was willing to participate, was the Eagles' final tune up.

The Eagles lost 93-77 after some disqualifications in the relays in some late-meet confusion.

However, HRV coach Keith Ebbert said he was impressed with the team's times, considering the intensity of training he had put them through recently

"The last couple weeks I've been hitting them really hard with practice and still getting good times out of them," Ebbert said. "With an appropriate amount of training and some more rest I expect they'll be swimming well."

The Eagles got a good series of swims from Alyssa Walker, who took second in the 200 IM and 100 fly, and a pair of first place finishes from Taylor Tyynismaa. HRV also got a dramatic finish from Erika Winner in the 400 meter freestyle as she held off a challenge from Sarah Madison of St. Mary's to win by three-hundredths of a second in a time of 5:32.34.

"Alyssa swam really well in both of her events," Ebbert said. "And Erin's time in the 400 was a personal best by more than 20 seconds."

Even though there was no other boys team for them to compete against, Ebbert still had the Eagle boys team going full out in their events, which were not scored.

"Tommy Tyynismaa really stood out this week," Ebbert said, "I wanted to get some speed out of them (before district) and I wasn't going to take it easy on them."

The meet was the final home meet for seniors Walker, Taylor Tyynismaa, Valeria and Carla Guerrero and Veronica Lopez.

"They've been leading by example and creating a culture for this team," Ebbert said of the seniors. "They all made a big commitment."

The Eagles will now spend the next week tapering and preparing for the district meet, which will be at Hood River Aquatic center Feb. 11.

"They are still swimming strong and with decent times even with a situation like this," Ebbert said of the team having to cram in training after the snow wiped out its most intense week of the season. "That leads me to believe that they'll swim well at district."
