While the Hood River Valley wrestling team may have been kept off the competition mat for the past week due to weather, the previous few weeks had not been short on action.
On Jan. 7 Jessica DeHart and Katie Eddy won a girls wrestling tournament in Kelso, Wash. Eddy was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament. MaKenna Sullenger and Marina Smith also competed at the tournament, with Sullenger earning the first win of her career and Smith taking a silver medal in the JV bracket.
On Jan. 13-14 the Eagles competed at the Oregon Classic in Redmond.
As a team HRV went 4-2, with wins over Sherwood, Silverton, Sandy and Crescent Valley and tie-breaker losses to Churchill and West Albany.
In the loss to Churchill, Andrew DeHart and Cesar Zarate both earned upset wins, while Nick Morgan won by pin over Nick Gates in 4:13.
Against West Albany, DeHart beat Carson French 6-1 at 132 pounds while in the heavyweight match, No. 2 Brandon Dominguez pinned No. 3 Virgil Powell in 1:50.
In the win over Sandy, Morgan beat No. 7-ranked Manny Dickinson 7-5, David Brunk beat CJ McKinnis by pin in 53 seconds and Dominguez won with a 31-second pin over Colin Schact.
Against Sherwood, Brunk beat Andrew Rice by pin in 1:55; unranked Steven Swafford beat No. 13 Brandon Brouse 9-7 and at 220 pounds upset No. 9 Martin Layna in 1:50.
Against Crescent Valley, No. 13 Juan Karlos Hernandez beat No. 1 Austin Powell 4-0.
Against Silverton, Eddy upset Nelson Mora with a pin in 2:51, DeHart upset Ben Griesenguer 16-1 and Brunk beat No. 5 Colby Reisterer.
In the girls tournament, Frannie Ybarra and Marina Smith took silver honors, with DeHart and Eddy taking first. Eddy was also named outstanding wrestler of the girls tournament.
Other big wins in the tournament came from Chaz Peterson, JK Hernandez, Ramon Ramirez, Charlie Mallon, Steven Swafford and Chris Castro.
While the high school wrestlers were busy getting some upset victories, the members of the Hood River wrestling club were also in action at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. More than 3,000 wrestlers participated over three days. Hood River wrestlers included Max Lane, Ryan Zeller, Christian Marquez, Chad Muenzer and Noah Wachsmuth.
Marquez placed first with a 7-0 record, which included five pins and two tech falls. Max Lane took second with a 2-1 record with two pins. Zeller took second with a 6-1 record with five pins. Muenzer took third with a 4-2 record and one pin. Wachsmuth took third with a 3-2 record, a pin and a tech fall.
