HAHRC is dedicated to making the healthy choice the easy choice for people in Hood River County!
The Gorge Grown Farmers Market is in full bloom right now. It is one of the most fun and easiest ways to improve your and your family’s health.
Here are some of the features to look for as you stroll through the market stalls of more than 30 vendors:
n Fresh fruits and veggies galore — Nothing beats fresh fruits and vegetables to improve your health. Most are picked the very same day you buy them. They can stay fresh in your refrigerator far longer than produce you buy at the regular store, where they were picked a week ago or more.
n SNAP promotion — $5+$5. Swipe your SNAP (food stamp) card for $5 and get another $5 match for free. This will allow you to buy $10 worth of fresh produce! This matching program is offered every week, so come each week and get extra value while improving your health!
n Punch Card promotion — The goal is to have your card punched 10 times so you can enter the raffle. Pick up a farmers market punch card at the information booth. Go to one market 10 times or go to all 10 markets in the Gorge and have it punched once at each.
Get your kids a LOCAL FOOD FIRST T-shirt too, and have them get jazzed on being farmers market regular attendees!
n August Block Party — For the five Thursdays in August, the GGFN Farmers Market will be teaming up with Community Ed’s Families in the Park for a weekly Block Party!
To allow people to move safely between the farmers market and Jackson Park evening concert at 7 p.m., May Street will be closed to cars between 13th and 18th streets.
Tables will be set up in the blocked-off street with many offerings including health screenings, bike helmet safety checks and food preservation advice booths.
So, mark your calendar now: Every Thursday, 4-7 p.m., at Hood River Middle School. In the event of rain, look inside to the school cafeteria for vendors. You’ll discover the easy choice is the healthy choice!
