Brooke Parrott checks in with lyrics

If you’ve been checking up with the News lately I don’t have to tell you that’s it’s been a musical whirlwind for me.

Between the open mic nights, Rick Hulett’s benefit jam-a-thon and the endless selection of music events, it’s hard to know which way to turn sometimes. Earlier this month, I had to not play a gig down at First Friday so I could attend a house concert.

If you start adding in the non-musical nightlife, events like new beer tastings at Full Sail and the play at the arts center, then it really becomes official — You’ve Got A Full Schedule.

During my recent free time, I’ve been helping out local bluegrass band Fiddlegrass, who will be kicking off the music at the Pear and Wine Fest on Saturday. Hope to see you there.

So, in between all of that, somehow I managed to catch up with keyboardist/singer Brooke Parrott, who will be in town on May 18 and 26 (CEBU Lounge).

For this interview, I decided that since I’ve been listening to so much music the last few weeks, it might be nice to get a jump start on one of her songs. To me, there’s something about knowing the words to a song that makes the listening experience that much more enjoyable. Brooke graciously sent in lyrics to her new song “Call it Done.”

And I’m sure if we ask her to play it, we’ll all be happily humming along.

  1. Besides being a solo artist, I had no idea you're in Loch Lomond, too. I think they were in Hood River not too long ago. Tell us about the recent European tour and how you came to be part of that band.

I joined Loch Lomond about a year ago after running into frontman Ritchie Young with a mutual friend on the street. We became fast friends and I eventually joined the band on keyboard and vocals.

The recent European tour was an amazing experience; it was great to finally have the full band out there for a seven-country tour, and we were blown away by how many people came out to the shows and knew every song.

We met so many amazing people and visited some incredible places. My favorites were the shows in Germany and driving through the Swiss Alps. I feel very fortunate to get to tour in Europe with my best friends!

We were indeed in Hood River not too long ago, and I’ll be back with Loch Lomond on May 18, then with my own Brooke Parrott band May 26 at Cebu Lounge.

  1. Was the decision to work on a shorter EP due to touring schedules?

I went down to LA to record the EP last October. I was just done with a Loch Lomond West Coast tour, and about to leave for some European dates.

I was also seizing the chance to work again with my good friend and longtime-engineer Wesley Switzer, who was about to leave on a four-month tour. This EP was my chance to finish up the songs I’d written while living in London, plus some newer ones.

I’m so happy with how it turned out, and can’t wait to share it with everyone! I’ll be selling some advance copies on May 26 at the show in Hood River.

  1. It looks like you're bringing some friends along on this tour. How is this going to change the sound up from last time?

I’m so excited to go on tour with these wonderful and talented people: Jennie Wayne on guitar and vocals (from Portland band John Heart Jackie), who is also opening up the show in Hood River, and Dan Galucki (of Run On Sentence and Loch Lomond) on drums.

I spent a lot of time touring the West Coast by myself last year, but I felt that I really needed a band to do justice to the songs on “Buried.”

  1. Is your setlist all original material or are there some covers, too?

We’ll mostly be playing the material off of the new EP, “Buried,” as well as some brand new songs and covers.

Call It Done

by Brooke Parrott

We never go down to Vegas, we just stay close to home

Always gamble casinos with the locals on poles

You favor poker on Mondays and I stay on the slots

Til your cigarettes are smoked and all my quarters are gone

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

Let's just quit while ahead, no one's winning this one

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

We stay at home on a Tuesday, never get out of bed

Do the crossword from every old paper instead

You give up all your to-do lists, in exchange for my phone

In the morning we'll catch hell, but all today is our own

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

Let's just quit while ahead, no one's winning this one

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

Hold on so tight, that our hearts are bruised and knuckles white

Better to know when to close our fist or let it go

I must've broke all the dishes, given you that black eye

But I just can't remember a moment besides

Letting my hair down so slowly, as we waltz to the room

Tell me what we fought about, cause I ain't got a clue

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

Let's just quit while ahead, no one's winning this one

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

Let's just quit while ahead, no one's winning this one

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done

Call it lost, call it settled, call it done
